Create a daily routine

Most babies get on board easily with a routine. Most actually thrive on routine. 

Take some time to take note of the usual course of things throughout your typical day with your little one so you can get an idea of when sleep periods would best work into it all.

For example, if you usually get up, have breakfast, playtime, and then read a book, you may find that following this period of awake time with a nap every day can help your 10-month-old sleep train themselves in such a manner that it’s very little work.

When your baby’s sleep ends, you can have lunch (most babies this age are starting or eating solid foods), followed by outside time, a snack, and more daytime sleep.

Naps should be anywhere from half an hour long to two hours long. If a nap goes longer than two hours, you may find that your baby tends to fight sleep at the next nap or bedtime.

At this age, most children of this age should be taking two naps per day. 

The third nap can be eliminated so there are more awake times throughout the day, and the nap schedule should reflect longer wake windows.

Should my baby have a bottle before nap time?

1. Understand separation anxiety

Separation anxiety can keep a child in this age group from sleeping through the night. While it may not have bothered them to fall asleep when they were younger infants, they are more attached now that they are more developed. Sleeping when they just want to be with you may be out of the question to them.

If this is the case for your child, try to give your baby a chance to learn to self-soothe. 

At bedtime, put them in bed after a kiss and hug, and leave the room. If you go in at the first cry, you risk teaching your child that they don’t have to sleep through the night if they make enough noise.

After ten minutes or so, go into your child’s room, and spend a few minutes of one-on-one time together, soothing.

Not all children hit a sleep regression, but one is common at ten months of age. 

While you may be tempted to buckle and allow your little one to sleep with you, stay up late, or skip quiet time or a nap because of it, don’t.
